BATAM ISLANDSituated in the north-east of the Riau province, this island is only a short ferry ride from Singapore. During the 1980's and early to mid-nineties, new industries relocated there, a huge industrial park was built with a housing estate for workers. New ports and a ship repair yard were built and oil drilling operations began earnest. Today the industrial park is home to thousand of workers from all over Indonesia and also some of the world's biggest names in electronics. Being so close to Singapore, the potential for tourism from its affluent neighbour has not been ignored. With some truly spectacular beaches on the north coast, several beach resort have sprung up offering guests a balmy tropical island gateway. Ferries from Singapore run directly to this part of the island making the perfect weekend gateway from the bustle of the 'Lion City'.
