BATAM ISLANDSituated in the north-east of the Riau province, this island is only a short ferry ride from Singapore. During the 1980's and early to mid-nineties, new industries relocated there, a huge industrial park was built with a housing estate for workers. New ports and a ship repair yard were built and oil drilling operations began earnest.
